Is it time for you to make a change to your eating lifestyle???
When I meet with clients that are primarily interested in weight loss (which I have done thousands of times in my career), inevitably their biggest fear is “breaking up” with their current eating habits. Oftentimes what I learn about an individual is that they may have an abusive relationship with food perhaps either restricting or bingeing or both, that they are using food to self-soothe or because they feel they deserve to eat what they want, or that they just have prioritized so many other aspects of their lives that eating good food has fallen off the list all together.
If you are thinking about making a change to your current eating patterns, but share these fears of “the break up”, we want to address these fears first. You can start by asking yourself some important questions:
· What is motivating you to change your eating pattersn?
· What makes you afraid to change this behavior & why?
· What REAL reason can you think of that you cannot make a change?
Making health changes, even positive changes is especially difficult for anyone to undertake. Sometimes our own haunting internal voice from our past gets in the way. The real reasons that we turn to food is often emotionally driven. Some of the reasons may include having poor self-esteem, needing to be in control, feeding an emptiness inside of us, having a hard time sharing our feelings, lacking coping skills, unable to trust ourselves & other, having a feeling of emptiness, or constantly feel pressure to achieve or for perfection.
If you want to change your eating patterns in the new year, remember that even though this is hard to do, you can do hard things! When making a choice to not a healthier diet, you are also making a choice you may be unaware of…choosing a path that may lead to disease that ultimately reduces the quality of our lives & often our lifespan. Does that mean we should never have fast food in our lifetimes, no. However, a diet that exists primarily with convenience & fast foods will pay you back in other “hard” ways.
